Grocery POS hardware: use what works, buy what you need.

We don’t sell hardware, so we have no reason to push a bundle. Here is what works with GetGroceryPOS at each spot on the counter, and what to check before you buy.

7The counter, piece by piece

Seven pieces, one counter.

Register screen

Works: Windows or Mac PC, all-in-one touch terminal, Android tablet, iPad, with a current browser.

Check: Screen at least 10 inches for the POS screen; a stand that doesn’t wobble.

Any brand

Barcode scanner

Works: USB or Bluetooth scanners that act as a keyboard (“HID” mode). 1D for UPC/EAN; 2D also reads phone screens.

Check: Sends Enter after each scan; reads the 2-prefix scale labels.

Zebra, Honeywell, Datalogic and similar

Label scale (deli, meat, produce)

Works: Scales that print a barcode with prefix, item code and weight in fixed positions.

Check: You can set the label format; it is legal for trade in your state or country.

Common deli and meat-counter label scales

Receipt printer

Works: 80 mm thermal printers your computer can print to, USB or network.

Check: Fonts for your languages (CJK, Arabic) if you print them; auto-cutter.

Epson, Star Micronics, Bixolon and similar

Cash drawer

Works: Drawers that open when the receipt printer sends a kick (RJ11/RJ12 cable to the printer).

Check: Matches your printer’s drawer port and voltage.

Any printer-driven drawer

Barcode & shelf-label printer

Works: Label printers and sheet labels for barcodes and shelf tags printed from the product list.

Check: Label size matches the barcode settings you create.

Zebra, Brother, DYMO and similar

Card reader / payment terminal

Works: The terminal from the payment processor you choose; in the US, an EBT-capable terminal from your certified EBT processor.

Check: Ask your processor; ask us on your demo which processors connect today.

Hardware questions, answered.

8 questions on the shelf

  1. What hardware do I need for a grocery POS?

A screen (PC, touch terminal or tablet), a barcode scanner and a receipt printer cover most stores. Add a cash drawer, a label printer for shelf tags, label scales at the deli or meat counter, and a card terminal from your processor.

  2. Do you sell hardware?

No. Buy from any supplier, or use what you already own. We tell you what to check before you buy, and we test models on your demo.

  3. Will my old hardware work?

Most scanners, thermal printers and printer-driven cash drawers do. Old Windows-only terminals work if they run a current browser.

  4. Which scanner should I buy?

A corded 2D scanner in keyboard (HID) mode is the safe choice: it reads UPC/EAN, scale labels and phone screens, and needs no driver.

  5. Do I need an NTEP scale?

In the US, scales used to sell by weight must meet your state’s weights-and-measures rules; most states require NTEP-certified, inspected devices. Check with your state office before you buy. In the UAE and Pakistan, follow your local metrology authority.

  6. Can I print Chinese, Korean or Arabic receipts?

Only if the printer has those fonts or you print as an image from the browser. Buy a printer sold with CJK or Arabic support if you need it; test before going live.

  7. Which card reader works?

Card payments run through a processor you choose, using their terminal. Ask on your demo which processors connect today; we won’t promise a specific integration until it’s confirmed for your country.

  8. Does it work on an iPad or Android tablet?

Yes, in the browser. For a busy lane a PC or touch terminal with a corded scanner and printer is more reliable.
