Your business settings decide how every sale is recorded: in which currency, at what time, with which taxes and on which receipt. Spend five minutes here before your first sale and you avoid fixing reports later.
Where are the business settings?
Log in with the admin account and open Settings → Business settings. You will see tabs for the business, tax, products, sales, POS, purchases and more. This article covers the tabs you need on day one.
Currency, time zone and dates
- On the business tab, check the currency. It was set from the country you chose at sign-up: USD for the United States, AED for the UAE, PKR for Pakistan.
- Check the time zone. A store in Houston uses Central time, Los Angeles Pacific, New York Eastern; Dubai uses Gulf time; Karachi uses Pakistan time.
- Pick the date format your staff read naturally: MM/DD/YYYY is normal in the US, DD/MM/YYYY in the UAE and Pakistan.
- Set the financial year start so yearly reports line up with your accountant.
Tax rates for your country
Tax rules differ by country, so set them up the way your accountant expects. These are the common patterns:
| Country | Typical setup | Prices entered |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Sales tax rate for your state, county and city combined; many groceries exempt, prepared food and non-food taxable | Without tax, added at checkout |
| UAE | VAT at 5% on most goods | With VAT included |
| Pakistan | Sales tax as it applies to your goods and registration | Without tax, “plus applicable sales tax” |
To add a rate:
- Open the tax rates screen under settings.
- Click Add, type a name such as “Harris County sales tax” and the percentage.
- If you charge two rates on the same item, create a tax group that combines them.
- Choose whether tax is calculated per line (inline) or on the whole invoice.
Then assign the right rate to each product or category when you import products. A full walk-through is in tax rates and tax groups.
We do not give tax advice. If you are unsure whether an item is taxable in your state or emirate, ask your accountant before you go live.
Receipt language and layout
- Upload your logo. A simple, high-contrast logo prints best on thermal paper.
- Add your store name, address and a short footer, for example your opening hours or “Thank you, gracias, 谢谢”.
- Choose the receipt language for the fixed labels such as “Total” and “Change”.
- Type product names the way you want them printed. You can include two languages in one name.
Receipts in Chinese, Korean, Arabic or Urdu need a receipt printer that has those fonts. We check your printer on the demo. See receipt printer and cash drawer.
POS settings worth a look now
On the POS tab you will find options you may want on day one:
- Weighing scale: turn this on if your deli, meat or produce counter prints barcode labels. Setup is in label scale barcodes.
- Keyboard shortcuts for common actions, which speed up busy lanes.
- Which payment methods appear on the payment screen.
Common problems
Tax is being added twice in the UAE. Your prices are tax-inclusive but the products are set as tax-exclusive. Change the product price setting or the tax display setting so VAT is included once.
End-of-day totals land on the wrong day. The time zone is wrong. Fix it in the business settings; new sales use the new time zone.
The logo prints as a black square. The image has a dark or transparent background. Upload a version with a white background and simple shapes.
My accountant wants the tax shown on each line. Switch to inline (line-level) tax in the tax settings.
